──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
BULLETIN #: 212
Date: 5 April 1991
Summary: Problem with IBM surface-mount Token-Ring
LAN cards
Server: All AT-bus servers
Software Version: All
Category: Communications - Token-Ring
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PROBLEM:
The surface-mount version of the IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter
does not work correctly on VINES servers and clients. Using these
adapters may cause the services on the server to become unavailable
to workstations accessing the server through the adapter.
The typical symptoms of failure include severe performance degradation
and loss of access to network devices (disconnects). The performance
problems and disconnects appear and increase in VINES networks as the
load on the network increases.
AFFECTED PLATFORMS:
The problem affects any AT-bus (ISA) server that has this adapter
installed, including all Banyan servers such as the Banyan/CNS. It
also affects any AT-bus PC client running this card.
IDENTIFYING THE SURFACE-MOUNT TR 16/4 ADAPTER:
The surface-mount Token-Ring 16/4 adapters (IBM P/N 25F9492) are
half-length adapters measuring 5.5 inches in width and 4.25 inches in
height (both measurements exclude the mounting bracket).
Note that Token-Ring 16/4 adapters that do not use surface-mount
technology are either three-quarter length or full length. These
three-quarter and full length adapters work correctly on VINES networks,
but are no longer commercially available from IBM and have been replaced
by the surface-mount adapters.
SOLUTION:
Currently, there is no solution to the problem except to avoid using
these surface-mount, half-length adapters.
Banyan has reproduced this problem using the IBM 16/4 card that
includes the PROM level 25F9524 Even and 25F9523 Odd. Banyan initially
isolated the problem to the physical layer and notified IBM about the
problem some time ago. Banyan is working with IBM to resolve the
problem.
When a fix to this problem is available, a technical bulletin will be
issued describing the fix and how it can be obtained.
